University of Wyoming Calendar for Sept. 17

These are among the activities scheduled Sept. 17-23 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Sept. 17, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Jay Chapman, an assistant professor in the department. He will present in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Monday, Sept. 17, 5-7 p.m. -- The UW College of Law will host “DNA and the Pursuit of Justice: A Discussion about Postconviction Testing and Wrongful Conviction in Wyoming.” Speakers include Andrew Johnson, of Cheyenne, who will share his story of wrongful conviction to actual innocence. The program will be in the UW College of Law, Room 186. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 5:30 p.m. -- The Wyoming Migration Initiative at UW presents an exhibition opening and book launch of “Deep Migrations: Lost, altered and conserved big game corridors in Wyoming” at the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 6-8 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum and UW Creative Writing MFA Program will host the 5x5 Reading Series. Featured writers are from the graduate creative writing programs at Colorado State University, the University of Denver, the University of Colorado-Boulder, Naropa University and UW. Topics will cover a range of genres, including fiction, poetry and nonfiction. A public reception will follow. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 7 p.m. -- UW Planetarium full-dome movie, “Cosmic Origins Spectrograph.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 6:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Art and Art History will host Jesse Burke for a visiting artist talk on photography. The talk will take place in the Visual Arts Building, Room 111. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 20, 4 p.m. -- The 20th annual George C. Frison Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology and Wyoming Archaeology Awareness Month Lecture present Stuart Fiedel, senior archaeologist for the Louis Berger Group. Fiedel will discuss “Native American Origins: Reconciling the Evidence of Ancient Genomes and Archaeology” in the UW College of Education auditorium. A reception will follow in the Anthropology Building foyer. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO presents three indie music groups: Speed the Pilgrim, Harpoon the Whale and Figures in Fiction. The show will take place in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music’s Symphony Orchestra will perform “The Magic of Broadway, Times Square to Lincoln Center” in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $12 for the public; $10 for senior citizens; and $6 for students. Friday, Sept. 21, noon-1 p.m. -- The UW School of Energy Resources Fall Speaker Series presents Robert Bradley, from the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford. Bradley will present “Carbon Materials for the 21st Century: Energy, Environment and Engineering” in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium. Lunch will be provided. Free.

Friday, Sept. 21-Sunday, Sept. 23, all day -- Cowgirl tennis hosts the Wyoming Invite, UW Tennis Complex. Free.

Friday, Sept. 21, 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. -- 7220 Entertainment’s Films Committee will screen “Ocean’s 8” in the Wyoming Union Family Room. Free.

Friday, Sept. 21, 8 p.m. -- UW Planetarium show, “The Cosmic Cooking Show.” The STAR Observatory on the rooftop of the Physical Sciences Building will be open from 8-10 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Saturday, Sept. 22, 9 a.m. -- UW’s Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE) office will host a service day in honor of National Public Lands Day. The day will include performing maintenance and building trails in the Laramie area.
