UW Cowgirls Hold Regional Rodeo Lead; Cowboys in Second

It’s only the second week of competition in the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR), but the University of Wyoming rodeo teams are proving that they have enough quality competitors to remain a factor among the top teams.

Both UW teams took impressive opening weekend wins two weeks ago. Last weekend, the Cowgirls were second at the Sheridan College rodeo and actually widened their overall lead in the CRMR. On the other side of the ledger, the Cowboys took a tumble and wound up sixth at Sheridan and relinquished the top spot -- but barely.

Eastern Wyoming College (EWC), which edged the Cowgirls for the coveted second-place spot in sending a full four-member team to last year’s College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), powered its way to the top position at Sheridan with 460 points and was remotely challenged by the UW women, who produced 265 points for second place in the second of five fall regional rodeos.

However, the opening weekend’s second-place team, Northeastern Junior College, of Sterling, Colo., failed to score in Sheridan, meaning that EWC’s big weekend victory propelled the Lancers into second in the region -- 140 points behind the Cowgirls. Casper College sits third in the region with 360 points.

The host Generals dominated their home rodeo with an impressive 635 points on the men’s side, jump-starting Sheridan into first place among all regional teams with a two-week total of 840 points. Gillette College was the runner-up team in the second rodeo of the fall season with 395 points.

Despite finishing sixth overall at Sheridan with 265 points, the Pokes are just 20 points from the top spot. In third place is Gillette College with 795 points.

At the Sheridan College rodeo, three Cowgirls all placed fourth in their respective events, with two of the team members still leading the region.

Rachael Calvo, a sophomore from Bassett, Neb., was fourth in barrel racing and leads the region through two rodeos by 10 points over Makayla Seely, of Casper College.

Defending CRMR breakaway roper Teisha Coffield, a junior from Yuma, Colo., has opened up a 60-point lead over Laramie County Community College’s Georgie Lane.

And Interior, S.D., sophomore Kelsey Lensegrav moved into sixth place in goat tying.

Lusk senior Denton Shaw and partner Cooper White, from Gillette College, took major control of the team roping event after winning the opening round, the short go and the average at Sheridan College last weekend. The pair has scored 330 points after just two rodeos and holds a 200-point margin over the second-place team. They have won the event two weekends in a row.

Jase Staudt, a junior from Nathrop, Colo., won the opening round of tie down roping, but recorded a no-time in the short go to finish out the average. However, he did score 60 points for the Pokes. The UW roper is third in the region.

Shaw and Staudt were the only two “points team” members to score at Sheridan.

Three UW rodeo team members also placed at Sheridan, but they were not selected for the “points team.”

Bulldoggers Kade Greer, from Gillette, and Jace Berger, of Saratoga, were first and fourth, respectively, in steer wrestling; and Jaden Coseo, from Loveland, Colo., and partner Cole Retchless, from Chadron State College, were third in the team roping average.

Central Wyoming College hosts the next regional rodeo this weekend in Riverton.
