UW Wind Symphony to Perform Fire and Light Nov. 8

The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony will perform a variety of musical pieces under the theme of fire and light Thursday, Nov. 8.

UW’s Wind Symphony, directed by Bob Belser, will perform “Fire and Light,” a piece that includes band classics and new sounds, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

“Fire and Light” explores the different concepts and meanings of fire and light to create a variety of musical offerings.

“We are performing some classics in the wind and percussion repertory that will appeal to those ‘band geeks’ in our audience,” Belser says. “We also will perform new works that will inspire them to go and add to their listening library.”

Pieces include Holst’s “Second Suite in F” and “The Florentiner March.” Also included will be “Suite of Old American Dances,” composed by Robert Bennett. Bennett scored pit music for musicals such as “Kiss Me Kate,” “South Pacific” and “The Sound of Music.”

“If audience members have enjoyed past concerts in which we have enlightened them with deeply moving sounds, and also thrilled them with a fiery flurry of notes, this concert will be a treat,” Belser says.

The second part of the performance will feature a playful sketch of children chasing lightning bugs when the symphony performs “Firefly,” “Only Light” and “Yiddish Dances.”

The UW Department of Music sponsors a variety of music performances throughout the semester. For future events, visit www.uwyo.edu/music/upcoming_events/index.html.
