UW Graduate Julian Publishes Poetry Collection About Wyoming

book cover with sheep on it
This poetry collection by UW graduate Tyler Truman Julian reads more like a story than traditional poetry, tracing the speaker’s travel back and forth across the state, from Sheridan to Cheyenne to Kemmerer and everywhere in between.

Recent University of Wyoming graduate Tyler Truman Julian, now a graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts in creative writing program at New Mexico State University, has published his first collection of poetry, “Wyoming: The Next Question to Ask (to Answer).”

The early draft of the collection was Julian’s senior honors project at UW, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in global and area studies, and Spanish in 2017.

The book is a series of linked poems that reads more like a story than traditional poetry, tracing the speaker’s travel back and forth across the state, from Sheridan to Cheyenne to Kemmerer and everywhere in between.

“In this way, the book explores the idea of ‘home’ and all the questions under that umbrella: family, legacy, memory, etc.,” says Julian, who is from Sheridan. “The poems are really love letters to Wyoming -- albeit sometimes dysfunctional.”

“The poems of Tyler Julian’s debut are fierce testimony to a wild and flawed land that holds its inhabitants both spellbound and reeling,” says poet Chelsea Dingman, winner of the 2017 National Poetry Series Competition. “Between musings, the poet uses the lyric occasion to interrogate the territories of the physical and spiritual worlds, and the unflinching psychology of the people of Wyoming …”

The book is in the presale order period through Finishing Line Press. For instructions on purchasing the collection, go to www.finishinglinepress.com/product/wyoming-the-next-question-to-ask-to-answer-by-tyler-truman-julian/.
