Amanda Reeder has been named the University of Wyoming’s new transfer relations director, a position that will work closely with Wyoming’s community colleges and out-of-state community colleges. Her appointment is scheduled to begin Feb. 18.

The Transfer Relations Office was created in 2017 to provide support to transfer and nontraditional students at UW. Reeder will oversee the day-to-day functions of the office, as well as provide the conduit of communication with Wyoming community colleges and partner institutions outside the state, says Kyle Moore, UW’s associate vice provost for enrollment management.

Reeder comes to UW from Utica College, where she was the accelerated nursing transfer coordinator since August 2016. Other positions she has held at the New York college since 2010 include director of transfer services and assistant registrar of transfer services. She received her bachelor’s degree (1992) in English from the University of Colorado and her master’s degree (1998) in higher education administration from Boston College. She also has held related positions at Northeastern University School of Law in Boston; Bunker Hill Community College in Charleston, Mass.; Salem State College in Salem, Mass.; the Archdiocese of Boston in Brighton, Mass.; and Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

“Amanda is the ideal selection for the University of Wyoming, having spent more than a decade supporting transfer students and creating effective transfer pipelines and partnerships,” Moore says. “Amanda also comes to UW having been a director of transfer services, with particular focus in providing education opportunities online. Most recently, Amanda has excelled in a highly technical role administering transfer equivalencies and university-wide transfer database systems.”

At UW, Reeder will help promote articulation agreements already in place among UW, Wyoming’s community colleges and out-of-state community colleges. Wyoming’s community colleges and UW have partnered to provide program-specific articulation agreements that assure students that courses taken at Wyoming community colleges meet UW degree requirements. Transfer students throughout the state can use these 2+2 plans to ensure they are taking the right coursework at the right time to complete most of their associate and bachelor’s degrees on time, and without excess credits.

Reeder has nearly 20 years of experience working with transfer students -- both at four-year institutions and at the community college level.

“I like to think of myself as someone who has a well-developed knowledge of transfer issues because I have worked in admissions, advising and in a registrar’s office,” she says. “Transfer students tend to be students who present more complex profiles than traditional-age freshmen because of the logistics of transferring between institutions. Having worn different hats in working with transfers helps to understand how to best support this population of students, and how to anticipate their needs.”

Reeder says undergraduate recruitment, in general, and transfer admissions, in particular, have become much more competitive the last decade, giving students more choices as the higher education landscape has become more complex.

“I think UW can provide a solid education at a reasonable cost to students, and one challenge is making sure that we can get that message out to not only prospective students, but also to our colleagues in community colleges throughout the region,” she adds. “Ensuring that the community college faculty and staff know that we will take good care of their students throughout the transfer process is something that all four-year institutions, including UW, can improve upon.”

Reeder says she looks forward to getting to know not only the UW community, but also Wyoming community college personnel.

“There are a lot of really exciting local and national initiatives going on right now that impact transfer services, and I think there is a real focus here to ensure that the university is engaged and providing excellent student services to transfer students,” she says. “I am looking forward to working with the transfer success team and UW faculty to focus our efforts with transfer students -- and to make sure that we are meeting the needs of students throughout the admissions process and after they matriculate at UW.”
