UW Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony to Play Feb. 28

The University of Wyoming Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony will present “Classical Winds” Thursday, Feb. 28.

The bands, led by conductor Bob Belser, with guest conductor Herbert Herrera, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

“We are performing some classics in the wind and percussion repertory that will appeal to those ‘band geeks’ in our audience, plus a couple of new works that will inspire them to go and add to their listening library,” Belser says.

The concert will feature well-established works with a twist, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Russian Sailor’s Dance,” Fisher Tull’s “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” and Howard Hanson’s “Chorale and Alleluia.”

UW oboe Lecturer Jennifer Stucki also will perform Eric Ewazen’s “Oboe Concerto,” a “new work that is soon also likely to become classic,” UW Fine Arts coordinator Kathy Kirkaldie says.

“If audience members have enjoyed past concerts in which we have enlightened them with deeply moving sounds and also thrilled them with a fiery flurry of notes, this concert will be a treat,” Belser says.

For more information, call Kirkaldie at (307) 766-2160 or email kirsik@uwyo.edu.
