More than 200 students representing 36 schools will return to the University of Wyoming campus March 3-5 for the Wyoming State Science Fair.

School groups and the public are invited to visit the 2019 Wyoming State Science Fair’s Pre-College Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Research Competition, according to Erin Stoez, Wyoming State Science Fair coordinator.

Students in sixth through 12th grade will display posters featuring their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) research.

“For many of these students, this is their first experience conducting STEM research and presenting it in a setting similar to a research conference, where they engage in conversations with professional scientists,” says Stoez, a lecturer in the UW Science and Mathematics Teaching Center.

Student posters will be displayed in the UW Conference Center for public viewing Monday, March 4, from 6:30-9 p.m., and again Tuesday, March 5, from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Student research may cover areas as diverse as robotics, environmental management, behavioral and social science, computational biology and chemistry.

Participating students will compete for cash prizes, scholarships and internships. Top students are selected to represent Wyoming at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the largest precollege celebration of science for high school students, or at the Broadcom MASTERS competition, a national competition for sixth- through eighth-graders. The ISEF is in Phoenix, Ariz., later this spring, and the MASTERS competition will be held in Washington, D.C.
