Robert Bonnie, former Natural Resources and Environment undersecretary at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is scheduled to discuss the evolution from old models of wildlife and natural resource conservation on public lands towards approaches that integrate incentives and collaboration across land ownership boundaries at the University of Wyoming.

Bonnie’s free public talk, titled "Beyond Confrontation and Regulation: Towards a New Conservation Paradigm," is at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the UW College of Business auditorium. A reception will follow the event.

The talk is supported by the Whitney MacMillan Private Land Stewardship Program and is offered as part of the UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources’ new Distinguished Speaker Series.

Bonnie is a current Rubenstein Fellow at Duke University, where he works on conservation and environmental issues in rural America. Before joining Duke, Bonnie served as undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment during President Barak Obama’s second term.

He oversaw the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service and was responsible for overseeing a variety of natural resource issues, including management of the 193 million-acre National Forest and Grassland System; implementation of Farm Bill conservation programs on America's farms, ranches and forests; and climate change.

During Obama's first term, he served as senior adviser to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack for environment and climate change. Before joining USDA, Bonnie was vice president for land conservation at the Environmental Defense Fund where he focused on developing incentives to reward farmers, ranchers and forest owners for stewardship activities on private lands.

He has master degrees in forestry and environmental management from Duke University’s Nicholas School.

The Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources’ Distinguished Speaker Series is a forum for environmental and natural resource leaders to share stories and inspire communities.
