Often, health-related research can be pictured as laboratory settings with test tubes and microscopes, with scientists examining human tissue cells.

However, health research also involves understanding human behavior, social and societal community environments, substance use and human interactions leading to criminal/illegal activities. Those issues will be examined during the University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences (CHS) annual Research Day March 28.

Professor Noël Busch-Armendariz, from the University of Texas at Austin, is the keynote speaker and will discuss “Ice Cream, iPhones and Exploitation: Current Evidence on Human Trafficking” at 11 a.m. in the Wyoming Union Family Room. Research day is scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Busch-Armendariz is the director at the Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work. She is a nationally recognized expert in sexual assault, human trafficking and domestic/dating violence. She is co-author of the first textbook on human trafficking released in 2018, titled “Human Trafficking: Applied Research, Theory and Case Studies.”

The CHS Research Committee, chaired by Jenifer Thomas, associate professor with UW’s Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, invites students and faculty from Health Sciences as well as the UW community to the day-long event dedicated to highlighting health-related research and education.

“Research Day is an important and exciting event for our college. We highlight the variety of research topics investigated by students and faculty from all our divisions/departments,” she says. “Research Day also provides a forum and opportunity for interdisciplinary conversations about health-related research, due to the diversity of our students and faculty.”

Along with the keynote presentation, the schedule includes research projects by students and faculty, both oral and poster presentations. Following a review by research committee members, certain projects will be awarded funding for travel and supplies needed to further research.
