WWAMI Program Med School Scores High National Rankings

The medical school connected with the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) Medical Education Program has been rated highly in the U.S. News and World Report “Best Graduate Schools” rankings for 2019.

The University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) was ranked second in the nation for primary care education and family medicine. WWAMI trains physicians for practice in both rural and urban settings, with students coming from five regional medical campuses, including the University of Wyoming.

“For 25 of the past 28 years, we have held the No. 1 ranking in primary care education and, for 27 of the past 28 years, the No. 1 ranking in family medicine training,” says Dr. Suzanne Allen, UWSOM’s vice dean for academic, rural and regional affairs. “In 2018, the last year they included rural medicine in their report, UWSOM held the No. 1 ranking in that category for the 26th consecutive year. Additionally, UWSOM still receives more federal research dollars than any other public university. Harvard Medical School is the only institution to be listed as receiving a greater amount from the National Institutes of Health.”

The WWAMI Medical Education Program at UW prepares students for the completion of their medical education with a special focus on practice in rural, sparsely-populated areas, such as communities in Wyoming.

“With nearly 70 percent of WWAMI graduates returning to practice in Wyoming, the WWAMI program ensures a continual pipeline of excellent physicians to serve the health care needs of our state,” Wyoming WWAMI Director Tim Robinson says.
