University of Wyoming Calendar for April 8

These are among the activities scheduled April 8-14 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, April 8, 9 a.m. -- The Wyoming Center on Aging, based at UW, hosts a health workshop for people with chronic health conditions and their friends, families and caregivers. The workshop will be at the Eppson Center for Seniors, located at 1560 N. Third St. in Laramie. Free.

Monday, April 8, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Susan Hubbard, from the University of California-Berkeley. She will discuss “Quantifying Watershed Behavior Using Geophysical Methods” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Monday, April 8, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a guest viola recital in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Tuesday, April 9, 12:20 p.m. -- The UW Division of Kinesiology and Health’s Intellectual Community Seminar Series presents Christine Chard, an assistant professor at Colorado State University. She will discuss “Authentic Community Engagement: An Adaptation of the Smart Fit Girls Program Using Youth Participatory Action Research.” The talk will take place in the Corbett Building, Room 137. Free.

Tuesday, April 9, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium full-dome movie double feature: “Seeing” and “Cosmic Origins Spectrograph.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Tuesday, April 9, 7:30 p.m. -- UW Presents welcomes the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain in the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $20 for the public; $17 for senior citizens and UW faculty and staff; and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Wednesday, April 10-Saturday, April 13 -- A variety of events will take place during the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice in the Wyoming Union. For a schedule of events, go to www.shepardsymposium.org. Free.

Wednesday, April 10, 12:10-12:50 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host “Lunchtime Conversations with Curators,” a gallery walk-through. Visiting artist Pavel Acosta will discuss his exhibition, “Pavel Acosta: Stolen from the Museum.” Lunch will be provided following the gallery walk-through. Free.

Wednesday, April 10, 5 p.m. -- UW’s Sigma Chi fraternity will host a spaghetti supper to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. Tickets cost $5 for unlimited spaghetti and can be purchased from Sigma Chi members or at the door during the event. The supper will take place at the Sigma Chi fraternity house.

Thursday, April 11, 10:30 a.m. -- A panel discussion, in conjunction with the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice, will be in the Wyoming Union Senate Chambers. “The Stolen Paintings: A Conversation on Ethics and Art in the Americas” will be a discussion about art and ethics, social geographies and political transitions, structured within the physical and metaphorical walls of the museum. Free.

Thursday, April 11, 1:30 p.m. -- Poet Buddy Wakefield will present a poetry workshop as part of UW’s Shepard Symposium on Social Justice. His workshop will take place in the Wyoming Union Senate Chambers. Free.

Thursday, April 11, 5 p.m. -- Paul Debevec, an award-winning senior scientist at Google VR, will speak in the Classroom Building, Room 306. His talk will feature his work, specifically light fields and light stages for photoreal movies, games and virtual reality. Free.

Thursday, April 11, 6 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host an art-making workshop for ages 13 and older. Visiting artist Pavel Acosta will guide participants in making their own works of art or re-creating known masterpieces using construction-based materials. Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO will host local bands Bob Lefevre & the Already Gone, and Wolves in Cheap Clothing in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m. -- Buddy Wakefield will give a poetry performance in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Free.

Thursday, April 11, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music’s Spotlight Series continues with the Collegiate Chorale’s performance, “Legacy,” in the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $12.50 for the public, $8.50 for senior citizens and $6.50 for students. Tickets are available through the UW Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Friday, April 12, 5 p.m. -- UW’s Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delta) sorority will host its annual “Let’s Taco ’Bout St. Jude” fundraiser at the Tri Delta house. Tickets cost $5 for three tacos or $10 for unlimited tacos. Tickets can be purchased through any Tri Delta member, by visiting the Tri Delta table in the Wyoming Union or at the door the day of the event.

Friday, April 12, 7 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a saxophone recital by UW student Thitapa Jirawattanaphan in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Friday, April 12, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “Aboriginal Skies: Land of the Lightning People.” Tickets are free, thanks to the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice. Reserve your seats in advance. Call (307) 766-6506 or email planetarium@uwyo.edu.

Saturday, April 13, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. -- The Fossil Fish Festival will take place at the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Saturday, April 13, 8 p.m. -- UW’s Sigma Alpha sorority will host its annual barn dance at the Quadra Dangle Square Dance Club, located at 3905 Grays Gable Road in Laramie. Preordered tickets cost $5 for singles and $8 for couples. Tickets at the door cost $6 for singles and $10 for couples. Preordered tickets can be purchased through any Sigma Alpha member. Proceeds will go to Heifer International.
