Mai, Boswell Return to UW in Interim Administrative Roles

July 3, 2019

Two former administrators at the University of Wyoming are returning to the university to serve in interim roles as part of the administration of Acting President Neil Theobald.

Bill Mai is the interim vice president for administration, and Chris Boswell is the interim vice president for community affairs. Both begin their duties Monday, July 8.

“I am thrilled to work with Bill and Chris in my new role,” Theobald says. “They both possess high intelligence, vast experience and good judgment. Their presence will make an outstanding university even better.”

Mai served as UW’s vice president for administration from 2013-18, and Boswell was vice president for governmental and community affairs from 2012-18.

Mai resumes his previous responsibilities overseeing the Division of Administration, with the exception of the Office of Financial Affairs, which reports directly to Theobald through Associate Vice President for Budgeting and Institutional Planning David Jewell. Boswell will provide policy perspectives and assistance to the president on issues of relevance to the university.

Mai graduated from UW with a bachelor’s degree in range management in 1987 and a Master of Business Administration, with an emphasis in economics, in 1989. He had a 24-year career in state government, including serving as an economic adviser to the governor; legislative analyst; senior legislative analyst; manager of the Budget/Fiscal Division of the Legislative Service Office; and administrator of the Economic Analysis Division of the Wyoming Department of Administration and Information. He also is a member of the Consensus Revenue Estimating Group, the team charged with forecasting state government revenue and earnings.

Boswell received his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting (1980) and master’s degree in journalism (1989) from UW. Before coming to the university, he was director of the Department of Administration and Information; legislative liaison for Gov. Matt Mead; and chief of staff during the eight-year administration of Gov. Dave Freudenthal. Boswell served 10 years (1993-2003) as a member of the Wyoming House from Sweetwater County, where he operated a small business and worked as a radio journalist.
