A University of Wyoming professor and associate dean in the College of Engineering and Applied Science recently received an award for his work with an engineering education organization.

Steve Barrett received the 2019 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Computers in Education Division Service Award at the ASEE’s annual conference last month. The award is given for “many years of dedication and devotion to the ASEE Computers in Education Division (CoED).”

The purpose of ASEE is the advancement of education in all of its functions that pertain to engineering and allied branches of science and technology, including the process of teaching and learning, counseling, research, extension services and public relations. CoED provides a medium of exchange for innovative concepts and experience-proven applications of computers and computational methods and devices in education.

“This organization closely aligns with my professional interests in teaching, engineering education and, most specifically, in computer-based engineering and teaching techniques,” says Barrett, a professor in the UW Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “It was so nice to be recognized for work that I really care about and enjoy.”

He began attending ASEE conferences in the late 1980s while a faculty member at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Since joining UW as a faculty member in 1999, he has been a regular contributor to CoED’s conference sessions and journal.

Barrett co-wrote a paper about UW’s makerspace efforts, titled “Library and Student Innovation Center: Makerspace!,” that was recently selected for publication in the Computers in Education Journal. The paper was a collaborative effort among UW Libraries, UW Information Technology, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Barrett served as chair of CoED from 2008-2010. Last year, he agreed to another eight-year term in the leadership tract.

“I’m glad I signed on for another leadership stint with CoED,” Barrett says. “I will need this time to earn this award.”
