Cheryl Hamilton

Colleagues of Cheryl Hamilton say the University of Wyoming Department of Psychology office associate has an exceptional record of accomplishment in performing her job duties well. She always meets deadlines, performs tasks correctly and takes pride in a job well done.

Those personal traits for on-the-job performance have earned Hamilton the UW Staff Employee of the Second Quarter Award. The award recognizes a UW staff member for his/her efforts toward excellence in the workplace. Established in March 1985 to recognize outstanding staff as the Employee of the Month Award, the award was revised into the current program in January 1990. The award is given to one current UW staff member every calendar quarter. The staff employee of the year will be named at Staff Senate’s Recognition Day celebration next spring semester.

A reception to honor Hamilton is Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. in Room 129 of the Biological Sciences Building, where she will receive various prizes.

Taking on new tasks the past year, Hamilton has proven to be a fast learner, according to one of her nominators.

“She has provided input that helps streamline our overall work operations and makes it possible for tasks to continue to be performed at the high level we are accustomed to,” the nominator says.

One example is Hamilton’s assistance to her supervisor as the academic adviser in a large department. Hamilton’s insights on best practices for managing the advising workload and providing excellent customer service are a valuable asset to the department.

“Her service to UW impacts the university at all levels. She is especially conscientious when it comes to supporting the student-centered mission. She is instrumental in assisting students, alumni, faculty and staff to navigate the policies and processes,” one nominator says. “She aids prospective graduate students with the application process; helps majors through the advising system; assists faculty and staff with daily department operations and problem-solving; coordinates with the chair to provide excellent clerical support; and is known as the first -- and best -- go-to person for other UW departments to get their questions answered quickly and correctly.”

Hamilton has been at UW for 24 years, the past 18 in the Department of Psychology. Before that, she worked in the registrar’s office.

Another co-worker praised Hamilton for being a true team player. One of her colleagues recently recovered from a long illness, and Hamilton had to quickly learn the office’s bookkeeping system. She was up to the challenge.

“Cheryl is highly efficient and keeps the whole department organized. She is one of those folks on campus who goes underappreciated,” a colleague adds. “She doesn’t toot her own horn. She is the glue that holds our department together. She is the worker bee who does whatever she can to help the department and its students. She gives 100 percent and doesn’t expect any accolades.”

In her own low-key way, Hamilton praises her co-workers.

“I truly enjoy working with everyone in the psychology department,” she says. “I have been blessed to be able to work with an amazing group of people who make it easy to come to work every day.”

An Employee of the Quarter nominee can be any UW staff employee, and each must receive three nomination forms from three separate individuals. Nominations must be submitted to the Staff Senate office. The forms are on the web and can be found here.
