UW Students Receive National and Wyoming Landman Scholarships

University of Wyoming student Trenton Cassibry, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was awarded a scholarship from the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL).

“I am entering my final year of the landman program at UW, and I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the oil and gas industry,” Cassibry says. “This program would not be possible without the support from AAPL, and I am humbled for them to invest in me and my education. I look forward to graduation so I can put to use what I have learned in my time at UW.”

Additionally, four students in UW’s Professional Land Management program received scholarships from the Wyoming Association of Professional Landmen (WAPL). Cassibry, along with Cody Eastman, of Gillette; Colton Edwards, of Douglas; and Monte Monchamp, of Maple Plain, Minn., will continue their education at UW with the support of WAPL.

“We appreciate AAPL and WAPL’s continuing support of our students as they become future advocates for the landman profession,” says Pam Henderson, academic advising manager with UW’s School of Energy Resources (SER).

UW’s Professional Land Management program, a concentration within the energy resource management and development major, is among 10 such programs accredited by AAPL. Twenty students are enrolled in the program, which produces professional landmen capable of providing sound stewardship of energy and mineral resources.

Landmen determine land ownership and availability for mineral leasing; negotiate agreements with landowners for drilling and production rights; draft and administer contracts with the assistance of corporate counsel; and ensure compliance with government regulations.

SER developed its program, in partnership with WAPL and the energy industry, in part, to meet an increasing demand for well-trained land professionals with specific knowledge of Western land issues, culture, heritage and the environment. Over the last three years, all UW graduates of the program have received job offers, many of them before graduation.
