University of Wyoming Calendar for Sept. 30

These are among the activities scheduled Sept. 30-Oct. 6 at the University of Wyoming:

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 5-7:30 p.m. -- The Wyoming Center on Aging, based at UW, will host Healthy U, a health workshop for people managing chronic pain and their friends, family and caregivers. The workshop will be in Ivinson Memorial Hospital’s Summit Room. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited. To register, call (307) 766-2765 or email dduhamel@uwyo.edu.

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 6-7:30 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host a panel discussion with visiting artists Troy Abbott and Enrique Gomez de Molina. They will discuss their exhibition, “(re)Evolution: Enrique Gomez de Molina & Troy Abbott.” Special guests and UW faculty members will respond to select works of art. A special exhibition preview for viewers to engage with the works on their own will take place from 5-6 p.m. at the UW Art Museum. The panel discussion will take place in the Visual Arts Building, Room 111. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “This Month’s Sky.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Wednesday, Oct. 2-Friday, Oct.4 -- UW’s Dementia Support Center, part of the Wyoming Center on Aging, will host “Dementia Capable Care of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia” at the Holiday Inn, located at 204 S. 30th St. in Laramie. The two-day foundation workshop is $50 per person, and the three-day train-the-trainer workshop, which includes the foundation workshop, is $75 per person. Wednesday, Oct. 2, noon-1 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host “Lunchtime Conversations with Curators,” a gallery walk-through with visiting artists Enrique Gomez de Molina and Troy Abbott, and Nicole Crawford, chief curator at the UW Art Museum. Lunch will be provided. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 3, 4:10 p.m. -- The UW president’s office and other UW departments will sponsor a presentation by Elijah Anderson, the Sterling Professor of Sociology and of African American Studies at Yale University. The topic of the presentation is “The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Race and Civility in Everyday Life.” His talk will take place in the UW College of Education auditorium. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 3, 5-7 p.m. -- Visiting artists Enrique Gomez de Molina and Troy Abbott will give demonstrations of their artistic processes. Gomez de Molina will demonstrate his playful nontraditional taxidermy in the UW Art Museum Classroom. Abbott will lead visitors through a special gallery walk-through explaining more about his process, including video editing and choices about framing his subjects. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO hosts Sorry, No Sympathy, a Wyoming melodic hardcore band; Wynona, an alt-rock band; and Sunnydale High, a punk rock band. The concert will be in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Friday, Oct. 4, noon-1 p.m. -- The UW School of Energy Resources Speaker Series presents Nick Jones, senior geologist at UW’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute. He will discuss the application of sequence stratigraphy in the Minnelusa FM and methods to optimize production in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium. Lunch will be provided. Free.

Friday, Oct. 4, 6 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host its 25th annual gala fundraiser at the Centennial Complex. “Fantastical Night at the Museum” is planned as a fun-filled, fantastic evening of art, food, libations, music, dancing, an auction and friends. Friday, Oct. 4, 6-8 p.m. -- A reception for Stacey Ann Tilton and Ross McDaniel Alvarez Everett, UW student artists, will be in the Visual Arts Building, THIS and THAT galleries. Free.

Friday, Oct. 4, 8 p.m. -- Pop group AJR will perform in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium. Student tickets cost $20 with a valid UW student ID. UW faculty and staff tickets, as well as tickets for the public, are $40. Friday, Oct. 4, 8 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium show, “The Power of Zero.” The STAR Observatory on the rooftop of the Physical Sciences Building will be open to the public for a “star party” from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Saturday, Oct. 5, 8 a.m.-noon -- UW’s Phi Lambda Sigma will host the 13th annual Fall into Good Health Fair. The event focuses on promoting general health and wellness while offering a variety of services and educational opportunities to all attendees. The fair will take place in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Free.

Saturday, Oct. 5, 1-5 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host “Creative Creature Constructions,” a workshop with visiting artists Troy Abbott and Enrique Gomez de Molina, along with educators and curators from the UW Art Museum. Participants are asked to bring stuffed animals or figures they are willing to donate, repurpose or share with the collective group. All other materials will be provided. The workshop is $20 per person, ages 16 and up. The workshop will be in the UW Art Museum’s classroom and studio. To register, go here.

Saturday, Oct. 5, 7:30 pm. -- “Locust: The Opera,” a chamber opera written by two UW professors, will make its debut in Laramie at the Gryphon Theatre, located at 710 E. Garfield St. The opera is an environmental murder mystery. Tickets are $15 for the public and $7 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at www.gryphontheatre.org.
