The University of Wyoming Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series will feature flutist Nicole Riner with pianist Xin Chang Monday, Sept. 23.

The two UW faculty members will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

“Old, New, Borrowed and Blue” represents the entire artistic spectrum of the flute. “Old” comes from Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s “Exotique Impressions,” the composer’s answer to Debussy’s impressionistic style. “New” is in the form of Philadelphia composer Joseph Hallman’s four pieces, which sample from and celebrate composers from the 20th and 21st centuries. The “borrowed” piece is Riner’s original transcription of the lush and heroic “Sonata in F Major,” originally for violin. “Blue” is Florida native Roger Zare’s take on blues and jazz sounds for flute and soprano saxophone.

Scott Turpen, chair of the UW Department of Music and saxophonist, will join Riner on his “(Re)Inventions.”

Praised for her “luscious, full sound” (American Record Guide) and “effortless precision” (Flutist Quarterly), Riner maintains an active international presence as a recitalist and pedagogue. She has taught flute at UW since 2006.

Chang is active as a collaborative pianist and chamber musician with singers and instrumentalists throughout North America and Asia. She serves as the collaborative pianist at UW.
