Jewish Scholar to Speak at UW Oct. 24

Menachem Mor, a well-regarded scholar of Jewish history, will present “Exile and Restoration in the Samaritan Tradition” at the University of Wyoming Thursday, Oct. 24.

His lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be in Room 215 of the Classroom Building at 4 p.m., with a reception to follow.

Mor will discuss the Samaritan traditions about their version of exile and return in the various Samaritan Chronicles. He will compare these traditions with parallel Jewish sources, mainly biblical sources and Josephus Flavius, to understand the role of exile and return in the Samaritans’ history, and the function of Mount Gerizim in these traditions.

Mor is a professor emeritus at the University of Haifa, where he served as dean of humanities from 2004-2010. He also has been the Philip Klutznick Chair of Jewish Civilization at Creighton University and a visiting professor at the University of Virginia and University of Denver.

Mor wrote “From Samaria to Shechem: the Samaritan Sect in the Ancient Period,” and his Hebrew work, “The Bar-Kokhba Revolt,” appeared in a substantially updated and expanded English version in 2017. The current phase of Mor’s project includes collaboration with UW’s Seth Ward, a senior academic professional lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, on the Arabic Samaritan Joshua Chronicle.

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies hosts Mor’s lecture, with support from the Laramie Jewish Community Center’s Asimow Lecture Fund.

For more information, call Ward at (307) 766-9273 or email sward@uwyo.edu.
