UW to Assist in Casper Aquifer Study

October 7, 2019

University of Wyoming research scientists will assist Albany County officials with a study of the Casper Aquifer, a major source of drinking water in Laramie.

Over three to four days within the next two weeks, UW researchers will conduct an airborne electromagnetic geophysical survey southeast of Laramie and along the I-80 corridor. During this time, a helicopter will be visible in the area with a large sensor hanging underneath, says Brad Carr, UW Department of Geology and Geophysics associate research scientist. Carr also is director of UW’s Near-Surface Geophysics Instrument Center and facility manager of the Wyoming Center for Environmental Hydrology and Geophysics.

“This study intends to increase our understanding of the Casper Aquifer by mapping groundwater flow zones,” Carr says.

The study is a joint project among the UW Department of Geology and Geophysics, Albany County and the city of Laramie.

For more information, call Carr at (307) 761-3884 or email bcarr1@uwyo.edu.
