UW Wind Symphony to Present Intensity Nov. 7

The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony opens the fall concert series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

The performance’s theme, “Intensity,” will feature works by composers who have made a dramatic impact or “shift in thinking” in writing for the modern concert band, says Director Robert Belser, a UW Department of Music professor.

Tickets cost $12 for the public; $8 for senior citizens, and UW faculty and staff; and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Featured on opening night will be the premiere of David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 10. For the last three decades, Maslanka’s music has been the most influential in the band world, Belser says. Maslanka died in August 2017.

Belser says other works to be performed -- that are “equally innovative and powerful” -- are Mendelssohn’s “Overture for Winds”; Grainger’s “Children’s March,” which demonstrates his mastery of wind scoring; and the creative sounds of Eric Whitaker in “Equus.”

For more information, call Belser at (307) 766-3335 or email at belserrs@uwyo.edu.
