UW School of Nursing Receives Full Reaccreditation for All Programs

The University of Wyoming Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing has been granted a full 10-year reaccreditation by the school’s accrediting body, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), for all of the school’s programs through Dec. 31, 2029.

These programs include the baccalaureate degrees in nursing, including the Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), an on-campus BSN option; Bachelors Reach for Accelerated Nursing Degree (BRAND), the accelerated second bachelor’s option; and the online BSN completion program.

Also receiving full reaccreditation are the Master in Science degree program, which includes the nurse educator and nurse leader concentrations, as well as the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, including the family nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner concentrations.

CCNE is recognized by the U.S. secretary of education as a national accreditation agency. An autonomous agency, the CCNE contributes to the improvement of the public’s health, ensuring the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing.

Receiving accreditation or reaccreditation is a lengthy process, requiring a rigorous review of the curriculum, outcomes and student success rates across all programs.

Sherrill Smith, dean and professor in the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, recognizes the work done by the school’s faculty and staff.

“First and foremost, congratulations to all of you on CCNE reaccreditation. I just received the confirmation yesterday (Oct. 31). It is a wonderful testimony to all of your hard work that the nursing programs have all been reaccredited through December 2029!” Smith wrote to the school’s faculty and staff.

The school received certificates recognizing the reaccreditation of the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral nursing programs.

Each year, the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing accepts 48 Basic BSN students into the four-year, on-campus program. The BRAND program is designed for students with a previous bachelor’s degree, even if not related to nursing. The BSN completion program offers two online options: One option allows registered nurses to earn a BSN, and the other option allows Revolutionizing Nursing Education in Wyoming (ReNEW) students and graduates from Wyoming community colleges to obtain their BSN degrees.

The Master of Science program of study provides nursing students the opportunity to become nurse educators or nurse leaders in any academic or health-related setting.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree prepares students for careers in rural primary care or rural psychiatric mental health care as advanced practice nurses.

“The Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing has been proud to offer quality, accredited nursing programs since 1951. This latest accreditation visit confirmed that the School of Nursing continues to provide quality programming to meet the needs of our students and the profession of nursing to make a difference in health care,” Smith says.
