The director of the University of Wyoming’s Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning recently was appointed to a leadership position for an inaugural international collaborative writing group.

Janel Seeley will serve as a co-leader of the Public Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) International Collaborative Writing Groups (ICWG). These groups are part of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL), which serves faculty members, staff and students who care about teaching and learning as serious intellectual work.

Seeley and three other co-leaders will facilitate a collegial process that generates new work by focusing on SoTL as public scholarship; extending the purpose of SoTL toward advocacy; its audiences toward a broader public; its products toward more public forms of communication; and its influence beyond courses and academic programs.

The products of this work will be more public modes of writing, potentially in forms such as white papers; public statements on pressing issues; material for mainstream media; web resources; public art installations or performances; or series of blog posts/podcasts/audio-visual content aimed at a wider audience.

“My role will be to define goals and parameters of the initiative to make SoTL more accessible to the general public and promote the initiative worldwide,” Seeley says. “Then, I will identify, mentor and coach group facilitators from around the world, who will coordinate efforts for international scholar groups.”

Seeley will serve in this capacity for nearly two years. She has been part of the ISSOTL network for four years.

For almost two years, she has been working to promote an SoTL initiative at UW.

“I want to continue this initiative here, and working with the international group will expose me to new models and experiences that will be beneficial to efforts here at UW as well,” Seeley says.
