UW Students Encouraged to Celebrate Earth Week with AllTrails Access

For the 50th anniversary and celebration of Earth Day, the University of Wyoming’s Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL) -- in partnership with Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center’s Outdoor Program -- is offering more than 100 UW students the chance to win an annual subscription with the popular app AllTrails.

The AllTrails app is popular for its vast database of trails, including national and local public lands; downloadable maps for offline navigation; trail directions, a lifeline feature that alerts someone when a participant leaves and returns; real-time overlays for weather and conditions; recording activity; and smartwatch and social media integration.

The sponsoring offices want students to take a break from staring at computer screens and Zoom meetings, and step outside for fresh air and exercise during this unprecedented time, says Erik Kahl, CSIL  associate director.

“Experiencing nature and the outdoors is a great stress reliever and allows for greater focus in the virtual classroom that our students find themselves in,” Kahl says. “Offering the AllTrails app as a healthy outlet is another way to show our support and continued efforts to engage with students no matter where they may be.”

To be eligible, UW students can follow @7220Entertainment and @uw_outdoor_program on Instagram and tag two friends who they wish they could be adventuring with this week.

One group of winners was announced Sunday, April 26, while another group will be announced Friday, May 1.

“By following these pages, students also will learn about other virtual activities being offered through CSIL and Half Acre, including how-to videos, comedians, jam sessions with area musicians, caricature artists and trivia,” Kahl says. “All these and more are free to UW students.”
