UW Campus Activities Center Updates Name, Offers Expanded Services

November 16, 2020

Even though the University of Wyoming’s Campus Activities Center has changed its name to Student Orgs and Entertainment, the office’s staff will still provide activities for students with safeguards in place to minimize health risks.

The renaming follows recent updates to regulations and policies to student organizations and their classifications. The changes come after a six-month review of the organizations, processes, activities, risks and services of UW’s student organization community, says Eric Kahl, associate director of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership.

The new classification system will label groups a Level 1, 2 or 3 student organization based on the student groups’ existing activities and affiliations with university departments. Efforts are underway to classify each student organization before the spring semester begins and communicate changes with student leaders. An open evaluation and review period will occur late in the spring semester to collect feedback and make adjustments to the new structure.

Programming offered by Student Orgs and Entertainment includes the opportunity for students to join one or more of 300 student organizations -- formerly known as RSOs (recognized student organizations) -- create a new student organization or attend on-campus events provided by 7220 Entertainment.

“We love our acronyms at UW, and ‘RSO’ made it insider-only language,” Kahl says. “Expanding to Student Orgs and Entertainment is more broadly understood by community members, alumni and prospective students’ families.”

In addition to the name change, services offered by Student Orgs and Entertainment also have expanded. Equipment checkout requests have moved fully online, and a new Student Org Workshop Series will regularly provide workshops and trainings for officers and members. While student organizations are prioritized for the poster run and equipment rental, campus departments can now use these services for a small fee, Kahl adds.

“Our hope is that the changes to Student Orgs and Entertainment will better capture the scope and focus of our office and the services we provide,” Kahl says.
