UW Webinar to Examine Allyship, White Privilege and Social Justice Racism

April 23, 2021

The University of Wyoming’s Black Studies Center will host “Allyship, White Privilege and Social Justice Racism,” a free webinar, Wednesday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m.

The webinar will feature diversity, equity and inclusion experts. Those interested in viewing the webinar can do so by joining via a Zoom link at https://uwyo.zoom.us/j/91665858412.

“This panel will explore the intricacies that center questions concerning who controls social justice definitions, endeavors and funding in higher education,” says Fredrick Douglass Dixon, director of UW’s Black Studies Center. “Our discussion will provide a critical analysis of the problematic nature of the mainstream narrative concerning allyship and white privilege in the field of social justice.”

The panel will introduce the term “social justice racism” as a theoretical lens to guide the conversation, Dixon says.

Dixon will moderate the panel discussion.

Panelists are:

-- Perry Benson Jr., a professor at College of Lake County, located in Grayslake, Ill.

-- Faith Bynoe, a racial equity and inclusion strategist.

-- Todd Byrd, a diversity, equity and inclusion professional.

-- Venus Evans-Winters, a senior researcher at the African American Policy Forum.

-- Ben Herdt, manager of academic advising for UW’s Advising, Career and Exploratory Studies.
