4-H After-School Program Collaborates With UW Makerspace

September 22, 2021

Albany County 4-H is redefining the traditional agriculture-based 4-H program through a partnership with the University of Wyoming’s makerspace studio.

The two groups have teamed up to create an after-school program for 8- to 14-year-olds in which students will be able to take part in activities through the Coe Student Innovation Center (SIC) makerspace located in UW’s Coe Library.

“I think the Coe SIC is the best-kept secret in Laramie,” says Mary Louise Wood, Albany County 4-H educator. “This is an amazing opportunity for students to take advantage of hands-on creative work and let their imaginations run free.”

The Albany County 4-H Makerspace Club meets from 3:30-6 p.m. every Tuesday through Oct. 19. The club gives students access to robotics, virtual reality and other tools and machines.

“Students are eager to get started using the tools and machines that are provided to them,” Wood says. “I can’t wait to see their growth through the next few weeks.”

During their time in the makerspace, Wood says the students will learn more about science, technology, engineering and math through art. This program allows students a hands-on opportunity for building projects, design thinking and fabrication.
