UW SER, 9H Research Foundation Launch $4,000 Student Energy Research Competition

The University of Wyoming’s School of Energy Resources (SER) and 9H Research Foundation are collaborating on a $4,000 student research energy competition.

Students entered in the competition will spend the spring semester developing an energy project on a designated topic addressing a critical energy need. The competition will be judged by energy experts at the end of the semester for cash prizes.

The competition is open to all majors, both undergraduate and graduate students, and teams must be composed of two members. Students declaring intentions to compete are instructed to email psteger@uwyo.edu by Jan. 21, 2022.

This year’s topic is a techno-economic analysis of different routes for hydrogen production in Wyoming, through either underground coal gasification or hydrogen from solar.

“9H Research Foundation wants to encourage students to partake in practical work that not only benefits their future career prospects, but also has the potential to drive industry within Wyoming,” says Gene Humphrey, chairman and co-founder of 9H Research Foundation.

Prizes totaling $4,000 will be distributed among the top three teams. The winning team will receive $2,000; second place will receive $1,500; and the third-place team will receive $500. The winning teams and their projects will be featured on the SER competition webpage at the conclusion of the competition.

“The School of Energy Resources is proud to partner with 9H Research Foundation as we incentivize innovative research on an emerging energy topic -- Wyoming hydrogen,” says SER Executive Director Holly Krutka.

9H Research Foundation is building a nonprofit solar facility on the 9H Ranch west of Laramie. Construction on the first 0.5 megawatts will be completed in spring 2022 and will include the latest state-of-the-art, thin-film Series 6 panels donated by First Solar.

9H Research Foundation is focused on being a hub for innovation, engaging students with practical research, elevating UW, supporting students and stimulating the Wyoming economy.
