UW Seeks Input to Guide General Education Redesign

The University of Wyoming is in the early stages of redesigning its general education program, and the committee charged with leading the effort is seeking public input.

Over the next month, UW’s Next Generation General Education Committee invites stakeholders both on and off campus to submit comments.

The first opportunity for members of the UW community is a strategic planning Idea Lab Tuesday, April 5, from 2-4 p.m. The committee invites feedback about “what the next iteration of general education should deliver for our students.” The session will take place via Zoom. The link can be obtained by emailing Vice Provost for Strategic Planning and Initiatives Anne Alexander at aalex@uwyo.edu.

More information about the committee’s work, a survey where comments can be submitted and information on other opportunities to provide feedback can be found at www.uwyo.edu/usp/next-gen/index.html. The deadline for this first round of comments is April 29.

The general studies program, called the University Studies Program (USP), consists of coursework required for all students pursuing bachelor’s degrees at UW. Last updated in 2015, the USP currently consists of a core of 30 required credit hours.

It is customary for universities to review and revise their general education requirements every decade or so. The process is governed by UW Regulation 2-105.

The Next Generation General Education Committee consists of 26 members from units across the university, including individuals familiar with transfer processes with Wyoming community colleges. The committee is co-chaired by Professor Susan Aronstein, of the Department of English; Professor Jacquelyn Bridgeman, head of the School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice; and Department of English Senior Lecturer Rick Fisher, director of UW’s Communication across the Curriculum program.
