Listening Sessions Nov. 7, 9 for UW Carnegie Community Engagement Project

The University of Wyoming’s Carnegie Community Engagement Task Force invites the UW community and partners to listening sessions in early November.

These sessions are an opportunity to share the progress of the task force’s data gathering to date and to hear about projects and priorities from the campus community.

The listening sessions are Monday, Nov. 7, at noon in Room 214 of the Classroom Building (in person only); Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 8 a.m. (Zoom only); and Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. in Room 314 of the Classroom Building (in person only).

The task force was constituted by Provost Kevin Carman; headed by Jean Garrison, from the School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies; and made up of 40 members from the campus and community to prepare UW’s application for the voluntary designation as a community-engaged campus.

Carnegie defines community engagement as the “collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.”

Key points in the Carnegie Community Engagement Task Force’s efforts include:

-- Completion of a self-study of the current community engagement practices, rewards, infrastructure and partnerships in place at UW, which will culminate in an application to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s Elective Classification for Community Engagement.

-- This process and classification should be viewed as the first step in an institutional effort to better facilitate and increase support for community engagement and outreach across the university to the benefit of faculty, staff, students and community partners.

-- The application serves as a “roadmap” or list of best practices, making it a useful tool to drive and sustain change in how the university approaches community engagement and outreach.

-- While the definition of community engagement used by the Carnegie Foundation is narrow and excludes many community-involved activities, the task force recognizes the value of these activities and that they often provide seeds that grow into community engagement.

-- It is the task force’s hope that its work will serve both those on campus doing work in Wyoming communities as well as communities and organizations seeking to partner with or access the resources of the university.
