UW Department of Music to Present Brazilian Music Recital Feb. 12

The University of Wyoming Department of Music will host an afternoon of Brazilian music by Duo Sampa Sunday, Feb. 12.

Duo Sampa is composed of pianist Helber Fernandes Ribeiro and violinist Lucas Martins. The duo will perform at 3 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The performance is free and open to the public. It also will be livestreamed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npu46lMfC6Q.

Duo Sampa will bring to light earlier works by Cesar Guerra-Peixe, an influential composer in the South American modernist and nationalist movements. The program will include Guerra-Peixe’s Sonata No. 2 (1978), “Três Peças” (1957) and Sonata No. 1 (1951), as well as composer Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth’s “Odeon” (1910).

Ribeiro, an instructor from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has performed in Latin America and the U.S., covering a wide range of the piano repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary composers. A doctoral student in piano performance at the University of Northern Colorado, Ribeiro has dedicated his career to highlighting Brazilian music, with recitals and lectures covering Brazilian composers and performance practice of their works.

Originally from Jundiaí, Brazil, Martins is dedicated to sharing his Brazilian cultural and musical heritage. He has produced and performed in multiple CDs and solo recitals featuring works by Brazilian and Latin American composers. As a latecomer to the instrument, Martins is passionate about teaching and sharing classical music to young audiences. He has started elementary violin programs and a series of concerts and workshops in Sao Paulo dedicated to young musicians.
