Closing out the University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance’s spring season is a musical adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 horror masterpiece, “Carrie.”

“Carrie: The Musical” runs Wednesday-Saturday, April 26-29, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. on the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts main stage.

Tickets are $16 for the public, $13 for senior citizens and $9 for students. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts box office, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/uwyo/6984. UW faculty and staff members, and military personnel can purchase tickets at a discounted rate. To receive the discount, visit the Performing Arts box office between noon-6 p.m. Monday-Friday or call (307) 766-6666.

The Performing Arts box office is offering a special two-for-one ticket deal to theater patrons who attend the production in formal prom attire. Advance ticket purchase is not allowed. This offer is only good for in-person ticket purchase on the day of each performance.

Associated with camp, prom, cliques and blood, “Carrie: The Musical” takes a deeper look into strained parent-child relations and bullying, ultimately asking the question, “What does it cost to fit in?”

The story centers on Carrie White, an awkward, outcast teenage girl who longs to be accepted. Bullied by the popular crowd at school and virtually invisible to everyone else, she is dominated by her loving but cruelly controlling mother. What none of them know is that Carrie has a special power and, if pushed too far, she is not afraid to use it.

The musical features a book by screenwriter Lawrence Cohen (“Carrie”); music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (“Fame” and “Terms of Endearment”); and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (“Fame” and “Footloose”). “Carrie: The Musical” first appeared on Broadway in 1988, and it was revamped for modern audiences in 2012. The UW production uses this latter version.

The production is led by UW Department of Theatre and Dance faculty members Matthew Greenberg, director; Cat Kamrath Monson, choreographer; and Zachary McCulley, musical director. Blake Watson, a UW student from Bozeman, Mont., is the assistant director and dramaturg.

“We hope you will join us for a ‘night you’ll never forget’ on the eve of Carrie’s prom -- for high kicks, high notes and, of course, some high technical elements,” Greenberg says. “You’ll have to buy a ticket to see how Carrie ‘flies.’”

Patrons are advised that “Carrie: The Musical” contains language and themes that some may find objectionable.
