November 19, 2012 — State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles where UW is making the news.

The San Francisco Chronicle was among many media outlets carrying a UW release about the demand for petroleum engineers worldwide and the large increase of students in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. The Wyoming Business Report carried the entire UW release.

InfoDocket, an online library journal, carried UW’s release about the university’s Libraries joining the Greater Western Library alliance, which designates UW as a top research institution. The Billings Gazette used the Associated Press version of the release.

The Casper Star-Tribune reported the Casper Area Economic Development Alliance is exploring the possibility of transferring its business incubator to UW’s Wyoming Technology Business Center.

UW Political Science Professor Gregg Cawley served as an expert resource in a Cronkite News article about a group in Arizona that wants to secede from the United States.

Wyoming residents overwhelmingly support wolf hunting, according to a survey by UW that was published in The Jackson Hole News and Guide.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and KGWN Television noted the Cheyenne public comments in selecting the next UW president in one of the local town hall-style meetings around the state.

UW President Tom Buchanan touted UW’s presence in Fremont County during an interview published in The Riverton Ranger. He did the same for Park County in an interview with The Cody Enterprise.

Magazine Themes WordPress and SheridanMedia.com ran stories about UW’s The IT Blog being named one of the top 50 IT blogs in the nation by EdTech Magazine.

Oliver Walter’s pending retirement as UW College of Arts and Sciences dean was profiled in The Laramie Boomerang.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and the Billings Gazette reported the ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for “Mount Moran,” a high-performance computer designed and built specifically for UW researchers.

Major construction projects planned for the Performing Arts Center, Arena-Auditorium and Biological Sciences Building were noted in Fremont County’s online news outlet County 10.

The firm that designed UW’s Visual Arts Building received an Engineering Excellence Award, according to the Colorado Business Journal.

The business and technology news website ZDNet noted UW is participating in a Microsoft demonstration project that will use biogas from a wastewater treatment plant to power a new data center.
