UW in the News


August 19, 2013 — State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles where UW is making the news.

The Casper Star-Tribune was among media outlets noting UW’s record-setting $56 million in private giving during the latest fiscal year.

President Bob Sternberg’s town meeting with faculty, staff and students was the focus of a Laramie Boomerang front-page story.

Higher Ed Watch noted in its first Teacher Prep Review that UW was rated highly for preparing mathematics instructors for the classroom. The review focused on how well institutions prepare today’s teachers.

UW Professor Kevin Chamberlain’s research to determine the age of volcanism on Mars continues to get coverage, including an article in The Daily Galaxy website that highlights discoveries that affect the Earth and the universe.

The Casper Star-Tribune quoted UW Economist Anne Alexander in an article about Wyoming exporters of industrial-related commodities enjoying a good year despite problems with shipping ports. Alexander also was interviewed in another CST story about a new hospital in Casper competing for patients.

UW Geologist Neil Humphrey’s research work that takes a significant step to better understand glacial movement in Greenland, which is fundamental to projecting future sea-level rise worldwide, was noted in Bright Surf, an online site for science information.

A Wyoming Tribune Eagle editorial gave UW a “thumbs up” for offering a good education for students at a good cost, making the university a good buy.

Cheech and Chong fans.com carried UW’s release about entertainer Cheech Marin’s visit to the campus next month. Part of his Chicano art collection will be on display at the UW Art Museum.

UW’s release noting a boost in the high-performance computing cluster known as Mount Moran was carried by HPC Wire, the website that covers news about the world’s fastest computers.

The Star Herald featured the paleoindian history of Hell Gap in Goshen County and UW’s history with the project.

UW’s release on free telehealth counseling services offered by the Department of Psychology appeared in the Casper Star-Tribune and was carried by several other Associated Press affiliates.

The Associated Press was among outlets that carried UW's release announcing the third annual Front Range High-Performance Computing Symposium on campus.

UW is among sponsors of a Heifer Marketing and Development Symposium next month in Riverton, according to an article in The Casper Star-Tribune.

The Casper Star-Tribune cited the efforts of UW Professor Cathy Connolly and a UW student group, the International Justice Mission Chapter, for their work on a law to combat human trafficking.

Cheyenne’s KGAB radio was among media sites carrying UW’s announcement about the beginning of fall semester classes.

Wyoming Public Media will record Cody’s Wyoming Stories next week at the UW Outreach School office, located in Park County.
