UW in the News

November 27, 2017

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Sheridan Media interviewed UW President Laurie Nichols about the university’s five-year strategic plan. She also discussed recruiting efforts, particularly in recruiting both Wyoming high school students and students transferring from the state’s community colleges.

Rebecca Watts, executive director of UW’s Trustees Education Initiative, discussed with District Administration a project that allows UW students to fine-tune teaching skills with a roomful of virtual students animated by an actor.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that UW is partnering with British company Drilling Systems to build a drilling simulation lab that officials expect will be one of the leading facilities of its kind.

The CS-T also reported that 11 budding science instructors at UW will travel across the state next semester to get hands-on student-teaching experience through a program developed in Associate Professor Andrea Burrows’ science methods class.

UW students walked out of class last week to draw attention to the administration’s handling of sexual assault, Wyoming Public Media reported. Organizers drafted a letter to President Nichols outlining a list of actions that should be taken to improve safety on campus. The Laramie Boomerang also published the story.

The UW Board of Trustees recently approved the external design of the planned Science Initiative building, a $100 million facility geared toward cross-disciplinary collaboration and boosting the quality of science research and instruction at UW, The Boomerang reported.

The CS-T reported that the UW Board of Trustees stressed the importance of reviewing all administrator salary offers and the need to follow regulations set by the board.

Marianne Eileen Wardle has been hired as the new UW Art Museum director, according to Art and Education. Wardle served as curator of academic initiatives at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.

The Boomerang noted annual holiday events -- the Festival of Trees silent auction and Happy Holidays, Laramie! -- both scheduled this week at the UW Art Museum.

The Boomerang also reported that UW plans to expand course offerings, with a target of eight new academic programs by 2022. UW administrators are developing a new method of vetting proposals for future bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees; and also certificates.

UW archivist John Waggener will discuss his book, “The Snow Chi Minh Trail: The History of I-80 Between Laramie and Walcott Junction,” this week at Western Wyoming Community College, reported Rock Springs’ Wyo4News.

Charlie Craig, a UW graduate, and his partner, David Mullins, are the center of a case that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear over the couple being denied a wedding cake in Colorado at Masterpiece Cakeshop in 2012. They were profiled in Washington Blade, which bills itself as “America’s LGBT news source.”

The Boomerang profiled UW Department of Physics and Astronomy graduate student Michelle Mason, who is studying supermassive black holes in the universe.

Joe Riis, a 2008 UW graduate, will talk about his wildlife migration photography work and his book, “Yellowstone Migrations,” during a presentation this week at the Gryphon Theatre, The Boomerang noted.
