UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW President Laurie Nichols seeks to hire more faculty and staff, and raise salaries for current UW employees as part of the university’s $407 million budget for the next fiscal year, The Laramie Boomerang reported. UW administrators presented their proposed budgets to the UW Board of Trustees Budget Committee last week. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) also published the story.

The Boomerang reported that the UW Board of Trustees will return some of the reserve funds that were moved into centralized accounts last June to divisions and departments. Wyoming Public Media published a similar story.

The UW Board of Trustees approved a new process for evaluating potential certificate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at its meeting last week, according to The Boomerang.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing the UW Board of Trustees approved the creation of a cybersecurity certificate program during its meeting last week.

KGAB Radio reported that the UW Board of Trustees will delay making changes to some UW regulations until its meeting in July. The UW Faculty Senate raised concerns about proposed changes to regulations that cover financial crisis procedures, including discharging faculty and eliminating programs.

UW psychology Professor Carolyn Pepper discussed her research on suicide in the Mountain West during Gov. Matt Mead’s Third Annual Symposium on Suicide Prevention in Cheyenne last week, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported.

UW economist Rob Godby told KUNC that re-imposed sanctions on Iran will mean higher oil prices; however, the sanctions could increase oil production in the Mountain West.

Godby also is quoted in a Sheridan Press story about how Wyoming’s tax structure is a barrier to economic diversification.

In an interview with The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Jim King, a UW political science professor, said that, based on recent trends, it is unlikely the winner of the GOP primary will lose the general election.

A UW research team is among a select few that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has chosen to develop novel approaches to lifelong machine learning under its Lifelong Learning Machines program. Science and Technology Research News published DARPA’s release on its website.

Jeff Clune, a UW assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, was quoted in a USA Today article, titled “5 reasons why ‘fake news’ likely will get even worse.” The Wisconsin Rapids Tribune was among outlets that carried the article.

The Laramie Boomerang interviewed Drew Bennett, the Whitney MacMillan Professor of Practice of Private Lands Management in UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources. Bennett will oversee the creation of a new program in private lands management within the Haub School.

Wyoming Public Media interviewed Mark Clementz, director of the UW Geological Museum, for a piece about a tapiromorph fossil that recently was found in the Green River Formation near Kemmerer.

The CS-T profiled Sarita Talusani Keller, the UW Art Museum’s Ann Simpson Artmobile educator. She travels the state to share art in communities where residents often have little access to original works.

UW College of Law student Emily Madden, of Torrington, is a recipient of the UW College of Law’s Clarence A. Brimmer Scholarship, The Torrington Telegram reported.

The Boomerang profiled Gabe Selting, of Laramie, who was selected for the 2018 Tobin Memorial Award as UW’s outstanding graduating man. Selting is the son of UW faculty members Marsha Knight and Leigh Selting.

The Boomerang also featured Sophia Kwende, UW’s outstanding graduating woman.

Pharmacy Choice published, on its website, UW’s release announcing its School of Pharmacy will continue to provide Drug Utilization Review services to the state for another five years. Sheridan Media also published the release on its website.

Wyoming Business Report published UW’s release announcing its Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute has selected seven projects to receive awards under a new program designed to acquire real-world Wyoming oil and gas reservoir operating data.

Wyoming Business Report also published UW’s release announcing the winners of the John P. Ellbogen $50K Entrepreneurship Competition at UW.

The CS-T noted that the UW Department of Theatre and Dance will tour nine Wyoming communities this month, performing “Six Songs from Ellis.”

Bill Sparks, UW senior associate athletic director for business operations, told The Boomerang that the UW athletics department projected about $209,000 from beer and wine sales during football and basketball games this academic year, but the total probably will come in at $104,000. The Denver Post and The Sacramento Bee also published the article.
