State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Laramie Boomerang and Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) reported that a survey of prospective students showed that women and ethnic groups approved of UW’s new slogan, “The World Needs More Cowboys.” The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) added that UW has already rolled out the campaign.

UW’s Biodiversity Institute was featured by The Christian Science Monitor for an article detailing how, across the United States, participation in citizen science is growing. Institute Director Gary Beauvais was interviewed, mentioning how ordinary citizens in Wyoming volunteer for various projects hosted by UW.

Newsweek noted the positive results of UW Associate Professor Baskaran Thyagarajan’s study on capsaicin. The compound that gives chili peppers their spicy burn caused long-term weight loss and improved metabolic health in mice eating a high fat diet. Drug Discovery and Development and Economic Times of India also published the article.

The Health Equity Leadership Program will send students from Howard University in Washington, D.C., to UW, while aspiring pharmacists from UW will head to the nation’s capital, according to Pharmacy Times. The program is an exchange experience, designed to expose each group of students to the unique challenges, methods and rewards of working in health care settings that are extremely rural or urban.

KUSA Television, of Denver, and Occupational Health & Safety magazine reported that UW is among regional schools developing a comprehensive study on the chemistry of wildfire smoke and how it changes with time and over space. UW Assistant Professor Shane Murphy’s Department of Atmospheric Science research group is part of the study team, according to a UW release.

One in four students experienced at least one instance of sexual assault during their time at UW, according to a survey commissioned by the university, reported The Boomerang.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and The Boomerang reported that Kimberly Chestnut has been selected as UW’s new associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students. Chestnut was formerly the assistant vice president for student affairs at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.

UW is making progress on a majority of the goals set by its strategic plan, according to a presentation made by President Laurie Nichols during a recent Board of Trustees meeting, reported The CS-T.

WPR reported that legislators are discussing how to proceed with replacing UW’s aging residence halls.

UW will host, with the Wyoming Department of Education, the Week of Academic Vision and Excellence conference later this month, reported WPR. A wide range of topics from early childhood education to the impact of suspensions and expulsions will be discussed.

Wyo4News published UW’s release announcing a Department of Energy grant awarded to UW’s Xiaohong Liu to improve predictability of interactions between mixed-phase clouds and aerosols.

A new research brief from Temple Stoellinger, UW Haub School assistant professor, proposes a solution to the Endangered Species Act that would give states greater authority to manage listed species without needing to reform the act itself. Sweetwater Now and Laramie Live published UW’s release.

KGWN TV reported that the UW Police Department will assist the city of Cheyenne during the 10-day Cheyenne Frontier Days celebration currently underway. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published a similar article.

UW researchers from an array of disciplines are collecting thousands of microbe samples from the state’s diverse landscape as part of a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation, noted WPR. WPR also detailed another research project.

The Boomerang featured UW’s annual Snowy Range Summer Dance Festival scheduled this week.

The Advanced Carbon Products Innovation Center moved closer to reality when Campbell County officials agreed on a land purchase for the project, according to Basin Radio Network. UW’s School of Energy Resources is a partner on the project.
