UW in the News

August 6, 2018

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Casper Star-Tribune, Laramie Boomerang, Wyoming Public Radio, Laramie Live and KGWN Television all covered UW’s media conference announcing events surrounding Matthew Shepard’s memorial this fall.

UW has sold nearly $6,000 worth of merchandise with its new slogan “The World Needs More Cowboys,” reported The CS-T.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Shelley Jewell, UW’s director of education abroad, who said it is important for UW students to study abroad so they can graduate with skills that come with exposure to other countries and cultures.

UW’s Wyoming Conservation Corps students helped with a project to conserve important areas in the Red Desert, noted Sweetwater Now. Sweetwater Now also reported that UW is working to become a global leader in biodiversity science.

Wyoming Business Report published UW’s release on UW Professor Maohong Fan’s research on reducing the energy costs of CO2 capture.

UW political science Professor Jim King says President Trump’s popularity in Wyoming will help boost Republicans’ chances for elected office in the state, reported The CS-T.

The Boomerang interviewed UW President Laurie Nichols, who said If UW’s enrollment keeps growing at its current pace, the school is unlikely to have enough space to house all students in the existing residence halls.

UW received a $2.5 million gift from alumnus David Le Norman to support its science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs, U.S. News and World Report noted. The gift will be matched by the state for a total of $5 million. Sheridan Media also published the article.

The Boomerang interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article delving into factors leading to the economy’s growth, both for Wyoming and the U.S.

The CS-T noted that Martin Agran, UW’s special education program coordinator, is part of a research team using a $1.4 million federal grant to study how placement of students with disabilities affects those children’s educational outcomes.

Most Wyoming community colleges are experiencing a slump in enrollment, according to an article in The Billings Gazette, but UW is expected to have another increase this fall.

Sheridan Media interviewed UW Institutional Communications and Marketing Associate Vice President Chad Baldwin about the vacancy on the UW Board of Trustees with the recent resignation of John MacPherson, from Saratoga. Sheridan Media also published UW’s release announcing that Grammy-winning Conspirare will perform during UW’s 20th remembrance of Matthew Shepard’s murder and UW Professor Colleen Denney’s new academic book on visual culture of women’s activism.

UW history Professor Phil Roberts told The CS-T that GOP candidates for governor have largely ignored one critical issue: with declining energy prices for taxes, how does the state maintain current service levels without some changes to the tax code or a speedy energy recovery?

Wyo 4News published UW’s release noting that nine UW elementary education majors studied abroad earlier this summer, gaining valuable classroom experience in Nepal preschools. Wyo 4News also published UW’s release on a vertical dance program at Vedauwoo.
