UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Atlantic interviewed Lilia Soto, a UW associate professor of American studies, for an article about how families have been separated by U.S. immigration policies for decades.

UW associate law Dean Sam Kalen commented on a Casper Star-Tribune article about Sen. John Barrasso, who wants to change the Clean Water Act to give states less power to stop projects. The provision up for revision would help Wyoming ship coal from Washington state ports.

Colorado Public Radio carried an Associated Press story in which UW economist Rob Godby commented on a proposed wind energy project in southern Wyoming that could provide power to more than 70,000 homes in northern Colorado.

Stars and Stripes reported that Erin Stoesz, a UW assistant lecturer and Wyoming State Science Fair coordinator, was named the 2018 Outstanding Junior of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization. She received the honor at the DAR national convention in Washington, D.C., in June.

Mark Clementz, a UW geology and geophysics professor, was quoted in a County 10 article about the discovery of the largest mammal fossils found to date in the 50-million-year-old Green River Formation near Kemmerer.

High Country News interviewed Anna Ortega, a UW zoology graduate student, and Matt Kauffman, the director of the Wyoming Migration Initiative at UW, about a mule deer doe’s 242-mile migration in western Wyoming.

WalletHub interviewed Virginia Vincenti, a UW professor emeritus of human development and family sciences, for an article offering tips to consumers on how to check their credit scores. WalletHub is a website that helps consumers make good financial decisions.

Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, was quoted in a Wyoming Tribune Eagle article about UW’s tuition increase for the 2018-19 academic year. Wyoming Public Radio published a similar article.

UW officials are seeking public comment on recommendations regarding student tuition for the 2019-20 academic year, noted Sheridan Media. Other UW releases published by Sheridan Media included the Alumni Association’s Friday kickoff events during the football season; UW Associate Professor Adam Myers’ Department of Energy grant to study high energy physics; the 25th anniversary of UW’s Haub School and Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources; UW’s new convocation that will kick off fall classes; and research from the Wyoming Open Spaces Initiative at UW shows that public investment in private lands conservation yields broad economic benefits for Wyoming communities.

Wyo4News published UW’s release announcing that two UW Extension communication specialists won national awards.

The UW Board of Trustees recently approved a proposal to create a $20 million endowed scholarship specifically for Wyoming students, reported Wyoming Public Radio.

Buckrail previewed last week’s Harlow Summer Seminar that took place at the UW-National Park Service Research Station in Grand Teton National Park. Greg Nickerson, a writer and historian for UW’s Wyoming Migration Initiative, and Bailey Russel, a photography instructor in the UW Department of Art and Art History, discussed Wyoming’s lost migrations, America’s longest mule deer migration corridor and Interstate 80 as a wildlife barrier.

SweetwaterNOW reported that three former UW basketball standouts -- Josh Adams, Hayden Dalton and Alan Herndon -- have signed deals with some of the world’s top professional leagues.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Mick and Susie McMurry High Altitude Performance Center at UW was held last weekend, reported WyoSports.
