UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that UW appears to have a record 1,860 freshmen this fall during the opening few weeks of classes. The Laramie Boomerang also published a similar article, and Sheridan Media posted UW’s media release on its website.

Using energy consumption as a measure, a team of international scientists, including those from UW, has found that ancient civilizations engaged in globalization more than previously believed, according to reports published in India’s , Science Daily and Health Medicine Network. Sheridan Media published UW’s release on the subject.

The Gillette News Record and The CS-T reported that UW officials may recommend that the state build new residence halls capable of housing 2,000 students. U.S. News and World Report published the Associated Press version of the article.

UW Extension Educator Brian Mealor will present a talk on the state’s and nation’s sagebrush grasslands at the Draper Natural History Museum in Cody this week, according to The Cody Enterprise.

The CS-T noted that a task force has proposed moving the Lab School out of the UW College of Education and building a new school on campus. K2 Radio and U.S. News and World Report also published the article.

UW law Professor Michael Duff told Democratic Underground.com that if Brett Kavanaugh is appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, he will “comprise the most radical, anti-labor-law Supreme Court in my lifetime.” Duff is a former National Labor Relations Board attorney.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release publicizing UW Associate Professor Lilia Soto’s book, “Girlhood in the Borderlands: Mexican Teens Caught in the Crossroads of Migration,” that details the lives of immigrant/migrant girls from Mexico.

UW researchers are conducting a two-day capture and study of a mule deer herd near Superior this week as part of the Red Desert to Hoback Migration Project, according to Sweetwater NOW.

Wyoming Public Radio previewed the UW Symphony Orchestra’s “It’s Magic” season.

UW’s release on a study describing recent patterns of population growth and change in Wyoming was published on Wyo4News’ website.

The Times News of Twin Falls, Idaho, interviewed UW psychology Professor Carolyn Pepper about the higher-than-normal suicide rates in Western states.

A rare tapiromorph fossil discovered near Kemmerer will be on public display at the Wyoming State Geological Survey, located on the UW campus, according to the online media website Buckrail.

Athletic Business featured UW’s new Mick and Susie McMurry High Altitude Performance Center, a facility to boost student-athletes who train at a high altitude to achieve peak performance levels.

Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, discussed with Sheridan Media a pair of grants UW received for UW’s Tier-1 Engineering Initiative and for a UW professor to map the universe by studying galaxies and quasars.
