UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW Professor Alyson Hagy’s new book, “Scribe,” received a favorable review from The New York Times. The book recently was selected as a finalist for the Southern Book Prize.

The Irish Mirror noted that legendary Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee, who died last week, donated personal papers/items to the UW American Heritage Center (AHC) in 2011. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reprinted Lee’s ties to the AHC in an article published May 2012. The newspaper also published a story about a new Stan Lee exhibition at the AHC.

UW is developing a new recruiting plan to bring in more international students, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported. Anthony Ogden, UW’s associate vice provost for global engagement, said an agency will be used, at no cost to UW, to recruit international students.

UW petroleum engineering doctoral student Vahideh Mirchi’s first-place win in the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ (SPE) International Student Paper Contest was featured in the SPE’s publication.

WyoFile interviewed UW researcher Matthew Kauffman about the recently published book “Wild Migrations: Atlas of Wyoming’s Ungulates” that features 70 migration stories from one of the most studied ecosystems on Earth and offers a first-of-its-kind resource for wildlife advocates and managers.

UW economist Rob Godby discussed with Wyoming Public Media Cloud Peak Energy’s decision to cut employee postretirement benefits. He said the company needed to make cuts to improve its earnings.

Among UW’s releases published on Sheridan Media’s website are: the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities’ adaptive sports grant for Wyoming military veterans; UW’s participation in a national effort to increase college access/attainment; and James Trosper being named the new full-time director of UW’s High Plains American Indian Research Institute.

The Standard, in Springfield, Mo., interviewed UW’s Lusha Tronstad, a Wyoming Natural Diversity Database research scientist, about her team’s study of stoneflies in the Tetons.

UW anthropology Professor Todd Surovell was interviewed by Science Daily for an article about how mammoths competed with other animals for survival, and how human hunters helped wipe out the large beasts.

The CS-T noted that UW is proposing to dissolve the Department of Geography and eliminate most geography degrees next year.

State and UW officials were on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the new $100 million Science Initiative facility, according to a UW release published by Wyo4News.

Wyoming Public Radio featured how Wind River Indian Reservation leaders are working with UW officials to send more Native students to UW.

UW would not gain financial advantage from outsourcing its dining services, a consultant told the UW Board of Trustees last week, noted The Laramie Boomerang.

The Boomerang also reported that the UW Board of Trustees agreed to a new policy to use half of all future tuition increase revenues to fund priorities identified by administrators and the Associated Students of UW.

Becker’s Spine Review published UW’s news release noting that Joseph McGinley, founder and CEO of McGinley Orthopedic Innovations, met with UW Master of Business Administration students last week as part of an executive speaker series.
