UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW Assistant Professor Linda Thunstrom’s study was cited in a Bloomberg article, titled “Does Prayer Help Disaster Victims?” Her mixed reaction findings indicate that thoughts do not affect what people do in response to disasters and tragedies, but prayers make pro-social action less likely.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that UW researchers and their colleagues have developed a computer model that has demonstrated remarkable accuracy and efficiency in identifying images of wild animals from camera-trap photographs in North America. International Society of Bionic Engineering, Science, Technology and Research News, Science Daily and Engineering and Technology Magazine also published UW’s release.

UW economist Jason Shogren told The Casper Star-Tribune that climate change will most directly affect the state’s energy industry, and state leaders must face that reality. Shogren was commenting on how the Fourth National Climate Assessment, required every four years by Congress, will affect Wyoming.

The Archery Wire interviewed Matt Kauffman and Greg Nickerson with the Wyoming Migration Initiative at UW about their research on ungulate migrations and their new “Wild Migrations” atlas. goHUNT and Around the O published a similar article.

UW Professors Anne Guzzo and Jeff Lockwood were interviewed by Science News to discuss how locust ecology inspired their original music piece “Locust: The Opera.”

The Jackson Hole News and Guide interviewed UW Professor Jim King about political candidates’ spending. He said the general leaning of the constituency is more important than what the candidate spends. King also told The Jackson Hole News and Guide that gender bias does play a role when male and female candidates square off in an election.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that implementing a law to create a common college transcript system for UW and the state’s community colleges will cost $1.5 million in initial funding, according to a Joint Education Committee report.

Bethann Garramon Merkle, a UW associate research scientist, was interviewed by Wyoming Public Radio about her research paper that details how poetry can be used in the classroom to better understand science.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing a three-year, $306,000 federal suicide prevention grant. Among other UW releases published include: UW geology Professor Mike Cheadle’s oceanic crust international research and a groundbreaking ceremony for UW’s Science Initiative facility.

UW College of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Michael Pishko told the Legislature’s Minerals, Business and Economic Development Committee that UW is on track in meeting Tier-1 Initiative goals, reported The Boomerang.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that College of Education Dean Ray Reutzel recently updated the Legislature’s Joint Education Committee on UW’s efforts to better prepare teachers for the state’s classrooms.
