UW in the News

December 10, 2018

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW Associate Professor Daniel Tinker commented in The Washington Post about a plan that would allow construction of up to 600 miles of temporary roads to log, thin and set prescribed burns from the Colorado-Wyoming border north across the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges as a way to reduce wildfires. The plan has received mixed reviews. Wildfire Today published a similar article.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that Gov. Matt Mead’s budget recommendations for UW call for expanding in-state scholarship programs; creating an “Excellence in Agriculture and Research” initiative; continuing to invest in science education programs; and restoring $1 million in athletic competitiveness funds. Wyoming Public Radio, Sweetwater Now and The Laramie Boomerang also published similar articles.

Mead approved nearly all of UW’s $19.4 million supplementary budget requests, The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) noted.

The Salt Lake Tribune and IndieWire reported that the documentary film “Black 14,” about the 14 UW football players kicked off the UW team by Coach Lloyd Eaton in 1969, has been accepted in the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in the Short Documentary Film category.

UW economist Rob Godby told Carbon County Economic Development members that a large wind production tax hike could hinder local production of a wind turbine farm in the area, reported The Rawlins Daily Times.

County 10 reported that UW has joined Interstate Passport Network, a nationwide organization of two- and four-year colleges and universities that allows students to block-transfer lower-division general education credits to any member institution.

Among the UW releases published by Sheridan Media were: recent UW graduate Tyler Julian’s first published collection of poetry, titled “Wyoming: The Next Question to Ask (to Answer)”; UW’s fourth Giving Day produced more than $1.1 million in donations; a Dec. 28 deadline has been set for UW personnel to apply to use the National Center for Atmospheric Science-Wyoming Supercomputing Center in Cheyenne for their computational research; and patent attorney Henry Nowak has been hired as UW’s new director of technology transfer and business resources in the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Jessica Western, the director of the Collaboration Program in Natural Resources at UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute, about the management of prairie dogs in the Thunder Basin National Grasslands.

UW’s meat judging team, for the first time, placed among the top 10 schools at the 2018 American Meat Science Association International Meat Judging Contest in Dakota City, Neb., reported Tri-State Livestock News.

The CS-T highlighted the UW Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of “The Nutcracker,” which was staged last weekend.
