UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Laramie Boomerang reported that UW will provide $450,000 in grant funding over the next five years to help spur entrepreneurship and other programs on the Wind River Indian Reservation. The Boomerang also reported that Gov. Mark Gordon, UW President Laurie Nichols and tribal leaders discussed economic development on the reservation during the first “WY-Wind River: Economic Development and Entrepreneurship Symposium.”

Kyle Moore, UW’s associate vice provost for enrollment management, told The Casper Star-Tribune that the university has received more student applications already than the previous year. He also added that he expects the university’s enrollment to grow.

Wikipedia published a blog recently from UW’s Anthony Denzer, department head and associate professor of architectural engineering. Denzer taught a Wikipedia writing assignment for the first time last fall in his architectural history course.

Crews have started drilling a 10,200-foot well so that UW researchers can test the feasibility of storing carbon dioxide underground in Wyoming, The CS-T and K2 Radio reported.

Wyoming Business Council featured UW molecular biology Professor Don Jarvis and his team members, who are genetically engineering insect cells to mimic human cells and create better vaccines and treatments for diseases.

UW’s release announcing the inaugural Native American Scholarship and Awards Banquet last week was published by Wind River Radio Network.

Fremont County public school children participated in UW’s “roadshow,” a program for children to receive hands-on science lessons from UW students and educators in a series of visits around the state. County 10 published UW’s release about the local event.

Sweetwater NOW published UW’s release announcing UW College of Arts and Sciences’ top graduating seniors, including John Richardson, of Green River. The website also published UW’s release on engineering students building miniature cars fueled by chemical reactions.

Eric Bennett, a Fort Washakie student, was selected an Associated Students of UW senator during elections last week, according to a UW release published by Wind River Radio Network. Sweetwater Now also published UW’s release.

The Boomerang reported that Laramie Mayor Joe Shumway will represent the city of Laramie on a task force overseeing the construction of new UW residence halls.

UW football recruit Naphtali Moimoi, of Hayward, Calif., was swept out to sea during an outing with friends and is presumed drowned, reported several local media outlets, including television station KRON 4.
