UW in the News

July 15, 2019

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

A UW-led team has discovered that ice from the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly sliding over a surface that theory suggests shouldn’t allow such movement as it makes its way toward the edges of the mass, according to a Newsweek article. UW Professor Neil Humphrey and doctoral student Nathan Maier headed the research, which was first published in Science Advances and posted on UW’s website. Science Magazine and Science Daily also published UW’s release.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) noted that UW economists Rob Godby and Benjamin Cook presented a report to lawmakers that an increase in wind taxes as high as $4 per megawatt hour could stall out development efforts and nullify any economic benefit that wind could provide the state. Finding the correct balance for a wind tax may be the biggest challenge for legislators, according to the article. Godby also was quoted by The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and U.S. News and World Report for related articles.

In a related CS-T article, Jonathan Naughton, director of UW’s Wind Energy Research Center, said there likely would be no single energy replacement for coal, but wind energy can be part of Wyoming’s efforts to diversify its economy.

CBS News interviewed Godby about two Powder River Basin mines that shut down recently. Godby said there are too many coal mines and too little demand for the product, which have been driving prices down. Vox quoted Godby on the domino effect of coal mine closures in Wyoming. He also was among experts who said Western coal reorganizations might provide needed consolidation, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The Gillette News Record interviewed Godby for an updated article about Blackjewel’s reorganization plan, which affects its two Powder River Basin coal mines. He also was interviewed by Wyoming Public Radio on what it will take the company to reopen the two mines.

UW School of Energy Resources’ Scott Quillinan was quoted in a CNBC News story published by Yahoo! Singapore News, titled “Wyoming may hold the key to the rare earth minerals trade war with China.” Quillinan discussed UW’s research into extracting rare earth materials from Wyoming’s coal.

China Jude, UW senior associate athletics director, was recently named the president of the Minority Opportunities Athletics Association, reported Wyoming Public Radio. The goal of the organization is to get more minorities into athletics administration.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing the new High Plains Mentor Network that is intended to increase the chances of success of Wyoming entrepreneurs in their startup endeavors. The program is a joint venture between the Wyoming Business Council and UW’s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

UW’s release indicating results from a new statewide poll on topics related to wildlife and migration corridors are available from the Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources was published on Duke University’s Nicholas Institute website. The CS-T and Elk Network also published the release.

goHUNT interviewed UW Extension rangeland specialist Derek Scasta about the repercussions of proposed wildfire breaks that could be detrimental to wildlife and habitat.

Citizen scientists will participate in Moose Day later this month, reported The CS-T. UW’s Biodiversity Institute will collaborate with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to locate and collect data on moose near Laramie.

Wyo4News and Sheridan Media published UW’s release detailing UW Associate Professor Adam Myers’ involvement on a project that will create the largest 3-D map of the universe’s galaxies and glean new insights about the universe’s accelerating expansion over the last 10 billion to 12 billion years.

UW art student Aisha Auradou, from Pinedale, recently was named runner-up in the Create Your Best Work Art Scholarship competition, sponsored by the worldwide company Tombow Arts and Crafts. Wyo4News published the UW release on its website.

Finanzen.nl, a German news website, noted UW’s 2015 line dance participation in “the most bizarre world records in every state” article. The UW student-led Cowboy Country Swing Club’s event drew 1,184 participants.

UW’s release announcing that 69 rising juniors are participating in the 34th annual Summer High School Institute July 14-Aug. 3 on campus was published on the SweetwaterNOW website.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that a number of high school students participated in the annual WWAMI High School Healthcare Careers camp last week at UW.
