State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate research on carbon capture technology at two of Wyoming’s coal-fired power plants, reported The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Coal Zoom. Researchers will study how to trap carbon dioxide before it leaks into the atmosphere at the Dave Johnston power plant in Glenrock and the Naughton power plant in Kemmerer, according to Washington Times and Associated Press reports.

Environmental News Network published UW’s release on a study that shows that much of the southwestern United States was once a vast high-elevation plateau, similar to Tibet today. UW Assistant Professor Jay Chapman says the study has implications for the distribution of natural resources, such as copper, and provides insight into the formation of mountains during the subduction of tectonic plates. Gov. Mark Gordon is expected to approve Wyoming’s first computer science standards after the state Board of Education recently approved guidelines. UW is among leaders in the initiative by hosting a computer science training camp for teachers, according to The CS-T.

The Newcastle Letter-Journal noted that local resident Mike Farnsworth, the vice president of Wyoming Refining Co., is among 12 UW alumni from across the state featured in advertising that promotes the university’s in-state marketing campaign, “The World Needs More Cowboys -- and So Does Wyoming.”

UW graduate Tyler Neasloney, from Cheyenne, will compete in Season 18 of Bravo Channel’s “Project Runway,” reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle. The reality show pits designers from around the world against each other as they compete in the industry’s premier fashion competition.

The Gillette News Record published an article on Moriah Powder River LLC, which recently filed for bankruptcy. UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed for the article, which focused on the company’s $11.15 million in unpaid ad valorem mineral taxes owed to Johnson County.

UW Professor Suresh Muknahallipatna led the successful completion of a software program that will allow for accurate weather forecasts up to 12 times faster than traditionally possible, according to a UW release published by Wyo4News.

The CS-T interviewed UW history Professor Renee Laegreid for a feature on the 150th anniversary of Wyoming’s passage of women’s suffrage. The right for women to vote is being celebrated by the Cowboy State this year. Wind River Radio Network published UW’s release mentioning local students who are members of UW’s senior honor society who recently honored their “Top Profs” at the 40th annual Top Prof Night.

UW’s College of Business will offer a fully online Bachelor of Science degree in accounting to help meet high demand for the profession and preserve flexibility for students across the state, The Sheridan Press reported.

The Boomerang featured the 27th annual Festival of Trees holiday celebration at the UW Art Museum last weekend.

The story of UW’s Black 14 football players who were kicked off the Cowboys team 50 years ago continues to receive publicity. Black Christian News Network One published a related article on its website. NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar mentioned the Black 14 in his column for The Guardian.

WyoSports profiled UW star basketball player Fennis Dembo, who returned to campus to have his No. 34 jersey retired last weekend in a ceremony at the Arena-Auditorium. The CS-T covered the ceremony.

The UW Cowboys will face Georgia State in the Arizona Bowl Dec. 31 in Tucson, according to The CS-T. This marks the fourth straight season UW has become bowl eligible.
