UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Three finalists have been named for the president’s position at UW, according to numerous media outlets including The Casper Star-Tribune. Also publishing similar articles were The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, The Associated Press, Wyoming Public Radio, Wyo4News, Wyoming News Now, K2 Radio and SweetwaterNOW.

MSN republished a New York Times article that quoted UW economist Rob Godby on Kanye West, who is living part time in Cody. West is attempting to bring his Yeezy clothing line to Cody.

In a roundup of energy news, Invest Advocate and Oil Price.com published a brief about declining coal production in Wyoming. The brief mentioned that Godby predicts this year Wyoming will more than likely see another decline of some 30 million tons of coal produced.

Cowboy State Daily interviewed Godby for an article on declining natural gas production in Wyoming. Godby said prices have fallen dramatically because of too much natural gas on the market.

Yahoo! Finance cited a recent study that shows regions in America’s West have little to no access to an institution of higher education, compared to the East Coast. Chad Baldwin, UW’s associate vice president for communications and marketing, said that Wyoming is a unique situation with just one major university, and that UW takes its job to offer accessible higher education seriously.

Buckrail reported that the Teton Range Bighorn Sheep Working Group, in partnership with UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute, is hosting public informational meetings on how best to help a small, native population of bighorn sheep with unique genetics that is at risk of local extinction.

A new study published by UW researchers could make mine cleanups less ecologically impactful, reported Wyoming Public Radio. Kristina Hufford, a UW associate professor, and former graduate student Keith Fleisher published their findings in the Journal of Ecological Management.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing that the Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Holly Krutka as executive director of the university’s School of Energy Resources. Coal Zoom also published the release.

UW College of Law students Jennifer Dean and Brent Rhodes successfully defended a client during a recent jury trial -- the first jury trial victory for UW students in any of the college’s eight clinics, noted KGAB Radio, SweetwaterNOW and Laramie Live.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Wyoming News Now covered UW’s latest “The World Needs More Cowboys -- and So Does Wyoming” campaign stop in Cheyenne last week. The program is designed to keep more Wyoming high school students in the state for college.

UW researchers, led by Professor Ye Zhang, conducted a multisite project to explore subsurface hydrology in and around the Laramie Range to expand the understanding of a critical water source for the western U.S., reported Experimental Expert.

Four UW College of Education students from Campbell County are student teaching in local schools, reported The Gillette News Record. The 16-week program pairs students with mentor teachers in the classroom.

The Cody Enterprise published UW’s release noting that the university’s Rocky Mountain Herbarium recently mounted its 1 millionth specimen.

KGAB Radio published UW’s release noting that volunteer judges are needed for the Wyoming State Science Fair early next month on the UW campus.

UW’s Division of Social Work recently was awarded a $55,000 National Council for Behavioral Health grant to help prepare students to take on the opioid epidemic in Wyoming and the U.S. KGAB Radio published UW’s release.

Seven UW wrestlers were named to the Big 12 Conference’s Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling Team, according to Wyo4News.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that 10 Shanghai University of Sport (SUS) members are part of UW’s Nordic ski team this season as part of an agreement UW has with SUS to establish an education coaching program in Nordic skiing.
