UW in the News

August 10, 2020

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Laramie Boomerang reported that students at UW and Wyoming’s community colleges who have been affected by the pandemic will receive cash payments from the state, the governor and UW announced in joint media releases last week. Click here to read UW’s release.

UW’s Board of Trustees hosted a Facilities Contracting Committee session where trustees and other stakeholders discussed the university’s current plans for the placement of new residence halls along the west side of 15th Street, The Boomerang reported.

National Geographic interviewed UW Professor Jeff Lockwood, an entomologist specialist, for an article, titled “'’Murder hornet' mania highlights dangers of fearing insects and spiders.” Lockwood discussed how insects should not be feared, saying many species serve valuable functions such as pollinating crops, killing pests and breaking down waste.

Assistant Professor Linda Thunstrom was interviewed by VoxEU about her UW economics team’s current research paper, titled “Hesitancy towards a COVID-19 vaccine and prospects for herd immunity.” VoxEU promotes research-based policy analysis and commentary by leading economists. The UW research paper appears on the Centre for Economic Policy Research’s website.

The Laramie Boomerang covered UW’s meeting last week that detailed the university’s plan to restart campus and return to normal operations. This was the first in a number of online town halls that will engage students, employees as well as the broader Laramie community with UW’s plan to safely resume amid the COVID-19 pandemic, The CS-T reported.

Bloomberg Government interviewed UW law Professor Michael Duff about how many on-campus workers across the nation fear contagion as university officials seek legal immunity. Duff said a school’s approach to liability could depend on whether it employs workers directly or as contractors.

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed in The Gillette News Record about Peabody Energy Corp. writing down the value of its North Antelope Rochelle mine by $1.42 billion. Godby says the company knows that the mine will unlikely produce again at the levels that made it the most productive coal mine in the United States at one time. The CS-T also interviewed Godby for a similar article.

The Wyoming Wildlife Federation noted that UW scientists are among researchers studying why Wyoming’s largest native bighorn sheep herd – that ranges from Dubois to Cody and includes approximately 4,000 sheep -- is declining all of a sudden. The reason for its decline is unknown, but likely it is a multitude of reasons led by disease, researchers say.

Wyoming Public Radio noted UW’s research on how Asian elephants are capable of using water as a tool. The research article -- published the journal Animal Behavior and Cognition – was written by Lisa Barrett and Sarah Benson-Amram, in UW’s Animal Behavior and Cognition Lab.

Wyoming Public Media interviewed UW Associate Professor Christine Porter about outdoor gatherings that are less likely to spread the virus in windy Wyoming. She cautions about hosting music festivals, saying such outdoor events are probably one of the riskiest outdoor activities for spreading COVID-19.

The Wyoming Department of Health is urging the testing of wastewater to detect COVID-19 at various facilities around the state, reported The Gillette News Record. The department is working with UW to set up a lab to handle additional sample volume if necessary.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that county fair personnel around the state are reporting that livestock judging has gone well considering that changes have been made in wake of the current pandemic. Several UW Extension educators were quoted in the release.

UW’s Alumni Association will recognize the women of its board of directors and those who have been employed by the association as part of the celebration surrounding the 150th anniversary of Wyoming Women's Suffrage. Laramie Live published UW’s release on the event.
