UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Scott Quillinan, director of research and communications at the UW School of Energy Resources, was interviewed for a Wyoming PBS segment to discuss the university’s rare earth element research program. The program was created to stimulate research and development in rare earth element production and processing, and for the potential economic benefits to Wyoming.

Oil City News and Gillette News Record published UW’s release noting that a five-year, university-led study challenges the long-held assumption that western Wyoming mule deer match offspring birth with the peak green-up of forage at the birth site.

UW law Professor Michael Duff, a labor law expert, was interviewed for a Business Insurance workers’ compensation piece, titled “Physicians’ opinions in comp claims correlate with who’s paying.”

Buckrail published UW’s release noting that the university received a $1.8 million gift from Ann Ramsay in honor of her late mother, Elizabeth McCabe, that will support 4-H and UW Extension employees located in Teton County.

UW Professor Jacqueline Shinker spoke with Wyoming Public Radio about how warmer temperatures are affecting mountain snowpack, which, in turn, affects stored water vital to area ranchers.

WalletHub interviewed Christelle Khalaf, the associate director of UW’s Center for Business and Economic Analysis, about how car insurance premiums are set and how COVID-19 has affected consumer demand for car insurance in the state.

Two Sweetwater County students were recognized as being part of the UW School of Pharmacy’s recent White Coat Ceremony, SweetwaterNOW noted from a UW media release. The event symbolizes passage into the initial stages of the profession of pharmacy practice.

KGAB Radio published UW’s release noting events for the annual Shepard Symposium on Social Justice this week.

UW representatives from the criminal justice program and the Associated Students of UW will be on a committee working with community partners. The Laramie Boomerang reported that city officials established the ad hoc working group for police and community relations.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that a new study from UW finds that caffeine may be a safe and effective substitute for Adderall. Alison Looby, a UW associate professor of psychology, said Adderall is prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder but is frequently misused.

UW is working with the Wyoming Highway Patrol and the Wyoming Department of Transportation to launch a statewide drone program, The Jackson Hole News & Guide reported.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW’s Lusha Tronstad, an invertebrate zoologist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, about how climate change may be affecting butterfly species in Wyoming.

A new online course created by UW will offer training and enrichment for outdoor guides. The Boomerang reported that the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, in collaboration with outdoor professionals, worked on the noncredit, six-week course the past two years.

Sheridan Media noted that UW’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute has completed a study of methane emissions from abandoned wells.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed John Koprowski, dean of UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, who led a project that identified a jaguar along the U.S.-Mexico border. Koprowski worked with a University of Arizona graduate student on the project and was the student’s adviser during his tenure at that school.

UW’s rodeo program is holding an online auction through April 24 as part of its fundraising efforts to help sustain the program throughout the year. KGAB Radio and 7220 Sports published UW’s announcement.
