<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><item href="/uwag/roots-ranges-listing-page/2025/hurricane-disaster-mapping-efforts.html" dsn="blogs"><title>UW Volunteers Assist in Disaster-Mapping Efforts After Hurricane</title><description>When Hurricane Milton struck Florida in October 2024, a team of 32 University of Wyoming faculty and student volunteers sprang into action from thousands of miles away. Led by instructional professor Ramesh Sivanpillai of the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center, the team used satellite and aerial imagery in ArcGIS to identify more than 3,400 points of structural damage across five Florida communities. The resulting disaster maps — compiled over more than 250 volunteer hours — were used by FEMA and other agencies to direct relief resources.
