The UW Alumni Association has coordinated the Wyoming license plate scholarship program
since inception in 2008. During the past seven years, Wyoming motorists have acquired
more than 6,700 brown-and-gold license plates, generating $670,000 for scholarships
that have helped 100 students attend UW.
The program enters the final year of the first cycle in 2016. As such, the brown plates will be issued only through Dec. 31, 2016. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2017, the second eight-year cycle will commence and a new gold plate with brown lettering will be issued. If you already own a UW brown plate, you will use it through your anniversary date of expiration in the appropriate month in 2017. We are working with the Department of Transportation to implement an online renewal application process prior to the 2017 renewal year. The goal is for current license plate holders to be able to seamlessly renew their plate(s) and retain their current numbers. The cost will be a one-time fee of $130, of which $100 will be deposited in the scholarship fund, and $30 will be remitted to the Wyoming Department of Transportation. More details will follow throughout the next year. For 2016, owners of vehicles who want to register new vehicles and acquire brown plates may download applications at uwyo.edu/alumni/uw-license-plate. This plate will only be good for one year.
By all accounts, the Wyoming license plate scholarship program has been successful. In fact, 10 new Wyoming community college transfer students will be awarded scholarships for 2016–17. UW students have benefited significantly from the financial aid, and the university has benefited from the pride that UW alumni and friends display by putting these plates on their automobiles.
